A handful of weeks ago we ended our week reading Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen’s picture book Sam & Dave Dig A Hole. The kids could not get enough of the book, and we had just the most magical discussion before we headed our separate ways for the weekend. If you haven’t read the book, you are really missing out. It is such a unique picture book.
One might even call it weird.
We had so much fun ending our week with a weird book, that I decided to try and read them a weird book to end each week. We call it Weird Book Fridays.
The kids love it.
I love it.
We all look forward to to it each week.
Here are a few of the books that we have read for Weird Book Fridays.

It has been fun to talk with the kids about what makes a book weird. We have come to the conclusion that just about any book could be considered weird.
After reading Spider in the Well to my fifth graders for Weird Book Friday, I sent Jess Hannigan a message and asked her if she’d be up for chatting with me for The Yarn podcast. I hope you’ll give it a listen. It was so much fun to talk to her about how fellow weird book creator Jon Klassen helped her get into picture books!
My amazing fifth graders are reading some pretty great books these days. Check out the video below where I dig into their choices.
Finally, I added some books my list of 2024 BOOKS!

Klassen is the best!
Love that picture book. Weird and wonderful!
