It seems like I just shared with you the books that my 5th graders were reading to start the school year. Where does the time go? It is wild to think of all the books they have read, how much their reading preferences have evolved, and how much they have grown as readers. It has been an amazing year.
Today, I get to share with you the books they are reading to end the school year.
Here are 5 things I noticed while filming this video:
They are still reading a lot of graphic novels, but the graphic novels they are reading have changed a ton this school year.
Their favorite authors today, are authors they had never heard of when the school year started: Gordon Korman, Alan Gratz, Dusti Bowling, Jerry Craft.
We didn’t have enough time to read all the books they wanted to read. I guess that is sort of the point. Reading doesn’t stop when the school year ends. Reading is something we do. For so many of my fifth graders reading was something they did for school. A lot more of them have become kids that read. Readers.
I’m going to miss them. I’ll spend most of the summer thinking of recommending the books that I am reading to them. Every book I read this summer, will make me think of at least one reader in my current class.
It is time for them to go to the middle school. They are ready, and our middle school is so lucky to get to spend the next three years with them. I’m jealous.
Thank you for caring about the books they are reading. It means the world to me.
