Last Monday, I was hanging out at my son’s high school track meet when one of my former fifth graders came up to me. It was so nice to chat with him about his first year of middle school. We talked about books, his favorite middle school class, and he showed me the magic tricks he had been working on.
The next morning, when I got to school I had an email in my inbox from him. He asked me if I had any book recommendations. How exciting is that? If you read my latest book with Donalyn Miller The Commonsense Guide to Your Classroom Library you already know a little bit about this reader. He is the kid that created a ton of awesome Star Wards origami after reading all of the books in Tom Angleberger’s Origami Yoda series.
Earlier this year when I was reading Jarrett Lerner’s beautiful illustrated novel-in-verse A Work in Progress I thought about so many of the kids I had taught over the years. This book is one that I think just about every kid will enjoy reading. The first page inside A Work in Progress includes this quote from me: Every kid that I have ever taught would find something for their hearts in A Work in Progress. This book truly is for EVERY READER.”
I emailed the kid back and let him know that I’d be sending Jarrett’s book his way. I cannot wait to hear what he thinks of the book.
I’m giving away a copy of A Work in Progress and a Copy of The Commonsense Guide to Your Classroom Library to one email subscriber. To enter the giveaway, leave a comment on this post. In the comment share a book that you think has something for the hearts lots of readers.
I recently purchased $250 worth of books for my classroom library. Check out the video below to learn more about my choices.
I fell a little behind updating my list of AWESOME 2023 BOOKS. Below are the books I added this week!
One of the books on my list is Laurel Snyder’s The Witch of Woodland. If you haven’t picked up a copy, the book was released last week, be sure to check it out ASAP.
I had an opportunity to chat with Laurel about the book. You can check out the episode by clicking on the book’s cover below.
I hope you’ll join me Wednesday evening for a free live event with author Dan Gemeinhart. I cannot wait to chat with Dan about his awesome books!
Thank you for reading and subscribing to my newsletter. It means a lot to me. Let me know if I can do anything to help you in the work you do.
I love recommending Fish in a Tree, Restart, and Garvey’s Choice. I have Hummingbird and Rover’s Story on my summer reading list based on your recommendations so I’m sure I’ll be sharing those in the fall. 💗
I am currently racing to finish When Stars are Scattered with my class for this last week of school. Spending some time in the life of a child that is so different from theirs (yet the same in a lot of ways) has been eye opening in a lot of ways!
