I have eight weeks and 38 days left with my fifth graders. Those days include field day, a day visiting the middle school, state testing, and a couple of days that I’ll be gone to attend a field trip and a gymnastics meet for my own children.
We are running out of time.
At the end of last week, I made a book stack of the books we have read aloud so far this year. I have so many memories attached to those seven books with my twenty-five 5th graders.
To be honest, I’m not sure what book we are going to read aloud next. With two read alouds left, I am feeling a little bit of pressure. Knowing that for many of them, the end of elementary school means the end of stories being read alouds to them, stresses me out.
I owe so much of my passion for reading to the teachers that read aloud to me in elementary school. The reading aloud of books like Hatchet, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, and The Mouse and the Motorcycle are etched in my soul.
My hope is that the readers you serve are enjoying read aloud as much as my 5th graders.
Long live the read aloud!
I hope you’ll check out the latest episode of The Yarn featuring our episode with John Schu. We recorded this episode life at the independent book store Bookbug last week in Kalamazoo.
I’m giving away a signed copy of John’s book Louder Than Hunger. To enter the giveaway, leave a comment on this post with the title of the book you are currently reading aloud.
I’ve added a few books to my list of AWESOME 2024 BOOKS!
Thank you so much for subscribing to my newsletter. It means the world to me. I hope you have an awesome week!
I am currently FaceTiming with my seven year old and reading The Doll People I love this mystery and looking for Aunt Sarah !
Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate. Great book in verse which goes well with our poetry study, and we just finished a unit about immigration.
